When I look at my ageing face in the bathroom mirror, I curse my teenage self and the hours I spent in the sun in the famous summer of ’76 when the UK was dry March through to September.

I spent most of those months in the garden with my face – slathered with cooking oil or butter – pointed directly at the relentless sun. It was the only summer I’ve ever turned nut brown. Just a warning to the teens and twentysome­things I’ve spotted similarly sun-worshippin­g on my local common – there’s always a payback. A wrinkly, ageing, sun-damaged payback.
