1884: Jack Dempsey beat George Fulljames by a knockout in the 22nd round at Staten Island, New York to win the world middleweight title – the first fight under Queensberry Rules.

1930: The first football World Cup came to a close with hosts Uruguay beating rivals Argentina 4-2 in the final in Montevideo.

1966: England beat West Germany 4-2 after extra-time in the World Cup Final at Wembley, with Geoff Hurst scoring a hat-trick.

1990: England captain Graham Gooch finished with 456 runs in the match against India at Lord’s, hitting 123 in his second innings having scored 333 in the first.

Stuart Broad took a hat-trick for England in the Second Test against India at Trent Bridge. The hosts won the four-Test series 4-0.
