1930: The first football World Cup came to a close with hosts Uruguay beating rivals Argentina 4-2 in the final in Montevideo.

1966: England beat West Germany 4-2 after extra-time in the World Cup Final at Wembley, with Geoff Hurst scoring a hat-trick.

1990: England captain Graham Gooch finished with 456 runs in the match against India at Lord’s, hitting 123 in his second innings having scored 333 in the first.
