Bid to boost child literacy

ONE in four children lacks basic literacy on starting school and ministers will today set of goal of halving the number by 2028.

Education Secretary Damian Hinds calls it a “scandal” that youngsters cannot read simple words and says it has a “huge impact on social mobility”.

Labour said the most vulnerable were hardest hit due to inequality across the education system.
