JARROD CALLS TIME ON BRAVE CANCER FIGHT

- BY NEIL McLEMAN

AUSSIE golfer Jarrod Lyle has decided to stop active treatment of his third bout of leukemia and enter palliative care.

He will now spend his remaining days close to his wife Bryony and young children Lusi and Jemma.

The PGA Tour pro, now 36, was first diagnosed aged 17 in 1999 and underwent extensive chemotherapy.

But Lyle (below) recovered to turn professional in 2004 and he won twice on the second-tier Web.com Tour in the United States before earning his PGA Tour card in 2009.

He survived another bout of acute myeloid leukemia in 2012 after finishing fourth at the Northern Trust Open, but the cancer returned in July 2017. Today Bryony posted on Instagram: “This will be the final post on Jarrod’s page. Earlier today we started palliative care for him as his body is no longer able to fight. We will take him closer to home to be near his girls.

“He has put up a courageous fight and he is surrounded by love.” She also posted on Facebook: “My heart breaks as I type this message. Earlier today, Jarrod made the decision to stop active treatment and begin palliative care.

“He has given everything that he’s got to give, and his poor body cannot take anymore. We’ll be taking him closer to home in the next few days so he can finally leave the hospital.

“There is not enough time to get this message out to everyone individually, so for some of our close friends and family I apologise for breaking the news in this way.

“We have done our best to ‘control’ the narrative surrounding Jarrod’s illness and treatment, and I’m not sure how much longer this will remain private.

“Jarrod knows he is loved, and the thousands of prayers and well wishes that have been sent his way have kept him going through some incredibly tough times. But he has reached his limit, and the docs have finally agreed that they can no longer strive for a positive outcome.

“My focus as of today is on our girls and doing whatever I can to get them through the challenges ahead.

“Jarrod will spend as much time as he can with them. When it’s appropriate, I will post details of a memorial service. In the meantime we ask that you respect our privacy.”
