‘Teetotalle­rs at higher risk of dementia’

ABSTAINING from alcohol increases your risk of dementia, a study found.

But moderation is key – as drinking too much also boosts chances of developing the condition.

The study looked at 9,000 British civil servants aged 35 to 55 in 1985.

Those who were teetotal the previous year were 45% more likely to have developed dementia by 2008, 23 years later, than those who had one to 14 units a week.

The risk rose to 67% for those who had abstained for the previous 10 years.

But every seven units a week above the recommende­d 14, there was a 17% increased risk.

But Prof Sevil Yasar, of Johns Hopkins School of Medicine in Baltimore, Maryland said drink still has “detrimenta­l effects”,
