A workplace BFF can be just what new starters need. Making the right connections and a sense of belonging can help newbies head towards a successful career.

Research among new staff at KPMG found that 75% enjoyed getting to know their colleagues via the firm’s new joiners website prior to their first day.

Apprentice Emma Hargreaves, who works at KPMG, says: “Having someone at work, whether it be a formal buddy or a really supportive team member, can make a huge difference to working life. It’s been integral to my development.” Here Emma shares her top tips: Never underestimate the conversations you have We can all learn something from every person we meet. You can bond with people over more than just work. Weekend plans or shared interests can spark lasting working relationships.

You may think networking events are a waste of time New contacts can take your career into a whole new direction. Saying yes to after-work drinks or joining the office five-a-side or netball team can mean meeting colleagues from all levels.

Be yourself Businesses want a diverse range of staff to bring in new ideas and a fresh perspective.

Develop your personal brand Think about what you have to offer and tell people about it. If you struggle to promote yourself, ask somebody what makes you a great colleague.

Be curious There are no wrong questions and no one ever looks bad for asking or showing an interest.
