Heroic dog of war gets film tribute

- BY PADDY MULCHRONE

THE most-decorated dog in US war history is featured in an animated film telling his amazing story.

Stray mongrel Stubby was sneaked into Europe in 1917 by Pte Robert Conroy.

He served in 17 battles, saved injured soldiers by barking to alert medics and helped take a prisoner when he bit a German spy and held on to him until help came.

The 26th “Yankee” Division’s mascot was promoted to sergeant and the women of liberated ChateauThierry made him a jacket on which he could display his awards. He returned a hero, toured the US leading parades and met three presidents.

Sgt Stubby: An Unlikely Hero, features the voices of Logan Lerman, Gerard Depardieu and Helena Bonham-Carter.

Producer Richard Lanni said: “We are excited to share Stubby’s amazing story.” The film opens on Friday.
