War women monument funding call
WOMEN who made arms used in the Second World War should be honoured with a monument, campaigners say.
Labour MP Ruth Smeeth is spearheading the fight for a Munitions Workers’ Memorial at the National Memorial Arboretum.
About 1.5 million women worked in factories producing ordnance.
Ms Smeeth said: “The women endured long hours in hazardous conditions. Their courage and sacrifice has for too long gone unrecognised.”
Permission has already been granted for a giant bronze statue at the Staffordshire botanical garden, but it will cost £250,000.
Supporters are calling for donations from defence firms and the public.
