- By Jupiter, it’s big

MISSION Our largest neighbour BBC2, 9pm

JUPITER is a mysterious swirling mass that just happens to be the biggest planet in the solar system. It’s a “monster”, reveals the dramatic narration.

“There’s a shortage of doctors in Britain – that’s where we come in,” says one of the medics being interviewed. “But the culture is totally different.”

Foreign doctors are queuing up to fulfil their dream of working for the NHS, but they must first pass an exam that tests their ability to communicate with British patients – and it’s not easy.

This compelling film follows the stories of overseas doctors as they adjust to life in the UK, study for the exam and get to grips with a new health system, culture and language.

Dr Swamy, who runs a training academy in Manchester, scolds one hopeful: “You’ve got to use the word please!” Day one of his course is about showing empathy.

There are culture clash laughs here, but it’s emotional too as doctors such as Youven, who has spent thousands of pounds travelling to the UK from India with his wife and daughter, have staked their future on being able to pass this test.
