SIR GEOFF BACKS SALE OF WEMBLEY
He’s 18.. he’s City’s midfield magician.. he’s heading for the top.. but Pep will treat fantastic Foden with kid gloves
FULHAM are set to make it a magnificent seven summer signings by finally snapping up Arsenal defender Calum Chambers.
Newly-promoted Fulham have agreed a deal to sign Chambers on a season-long loan from the Gunners.
Chambers, 23, signed a new four-year Arsenal deal last month and had been earmarked for a key centre-back role by manager Unai Emery. But pre-season line-ups have suggested summer signing Sokratis Papastathopoulos and Shkodran Mustafi will be preferred. That alerted Fulham, who revived their interest in Chambers and tempted him to Craven Cottage with the offer of regular first-team football.
Fulham expect to be without £20million signing Alfie Mawson (left) until next month as he recovers from knee surgery. SIR GEOFF HURST would back the sale of Wembley if it led to major investment in grassroots football.
The FA is still pondering a £600million offer from Fulham owner Shahid Khan, but any deal would see England continue to play at its traditional home through a leasing agreement.
Hurst, 76, who fired a Wembley hat-trick in England’s 1966 World Cup Final win, said: “Nobody understands the heritage of Wembley more than me, but I am probably leaning more towards a successful sale.
“If nothing much changes, the international teams still play there and the enormous amount of money that comes is used constructively it could be fantastic. Investment in facilities, coaching, bringing money for grassroots, it’s so important for young kids.
“And some things must be retained, like the bust of Sir Alf Ramsey. If that was taken away I’d be bitterly disappointed.”
