We need more Carry On Corrie

CORONATION Street star Sally Dynevor has said she wants to see more comedy on the cobbles after a year of doom and gloom.

The long-serving cast member, 55, said it was “worrying” when the ITV soap got too dark under former boss Kate Oates. Sally, who joined Corrie in January 1986, said: “I like the mixture of dark and comedy. I think when we lose the comedy that’s the worrying time.

“Some of these stories have been absolutely amazing. But I’d have liked to see a bit more comedy if I’m absolutely honest.”

Executive producer Oates was praised for tackling tough issues but has moved on to a new job and been replaced by former Emmerdale boss Iain MacLeod.

Fans have complained about a lack of light-hearted storylines in the past year.

The soap won plaudits for tackling difficult subjects including underage grooming, gay rape and suicide.

Sally’s character Sally Metcalfe is in a big new storyline in which she is likely to be jailed. Scheming Duncan Radfield (Nicholas Gleaves) frames her after scamming her into giving him £40,000.

The actress said: “For Sally that is the worst thing, the shame of it. Just the fact that everybody on Coronation Street knows she’s gone to prison.”
