‘Steel summit’ demand as industry faces crisis
MINISTERS should host a “Steel Summit” to thrash out plans to save the industry, MPs and peers have demanded.
The fragile sector faces a fresh threat after the US slapped a 25% tariff on steel exports from the EU – including the UK. A cross-party group of politicians want Business Secretary Greg Clark to bring together campaigners, unions and manufacturers to discuss how to deal with the mounting crisis.
A similar summit was called in 2015 when cheap Chinese steel threatened the industry.
Westminster’s All-Party Parliamentary Group on Steel and Metal-Related Industries has written to Mr Clark to convene a summit.
Their letter, seen by the Mirror, highlights the threat the US tariff poses.
A Business Department spokesman said: “Ministers frequently meet steel industry companies and we are working with the sector to develop a long-term viable solution.”
