BENEFIT Doing aerobics EXERCISE can cut poor mental health by more than 40%, a study suggests.

Research on 1.2 million Americans found those who exercised reported 1.5 fewer days of poor mental health each month.

Team sports were the most beneficial, and even doing household chores reduced bad days by 10%.

Exercising for 45 minutes three to five times a week had the biggest benefits. The best types were cycling, aerobic and gym, which reduced poor mental health days by 22%, 21%, and 20% respectively.

Dr Adam Chekroud, of Yale University, said: “We are now using this to try to match people with a specific exercise regime that helps improve their mental health.”

MEMORIES

Jane’s sister Mary Chabannais was visibly upset at news of Gaut’s death, saying it was a reminder of Marky’s murder, when Jane was 23.

The classroom assistant said: “This has brought it all back, terrible memories. Jane is my younger sister. I used to look after that poor little boy.

“I was living in Caerphilly but moved when I had my twins. I had only been moved away a week when it happened.

“I was due to see Jane soon. I don’t know how she’s reacted to this news.”

A source close to the family added: “This is such a hard thing for Jane. I think she will be going through total hell right now. She’s a lovely person.”

A police cordon remained outside Gaut’s flat in New Tredegar last night. Forensics officers and police had swept the scene. Searches are also believed to have been carried out in a river behind the property.

Caerphilly council said: “We can confirm it is a council property. We are helping police with inquiries.”

Three men, aged 47, 23 and 51, all from the New Tredegar area, were last night charged with murder.

They are due to appear in Newport magistrates’ court this morning.

Gwent Police has appealed for further information, adding: “The cause of death will be determined following a postmortem.”
