JERMAINE PENNANT ON SEEING GIRLFRIEND JEN’S POSTERS

FOOTBALLER Jermaine Pennant has told how he covered up the “massacre” of his girlfriend’s cat, because he was terrified she would dump him if she found out.

The ex-Liverpool winger panicked when a pal phoned to say the star’s dog had gone for thengirlfriend Jennifer Metcalfe’s beloved Persian.

But rather than own up to Hollyoaks and Dancing on Ice star Jen, he hired cleaners to conceal the evidence, and even brought in a decorator to replace the bloodied wallpaper.

And he has admitted he then let distraught Jen plaster the neighbourhood in reward posters after telling her the cat had run away.

Jermaine, 35, said: “I’ve never said a word because I know Jennifer would be devastated.”

His confession comes nine years after the couple last dated. Jermaine added: “I was driving into training, seeing posters all round Liverpool appealing for a white cat.

“I was thinking, ‘Oh, God! If only you knew!’ It was the most mortifying experience of my life.”

Jermaine explained how pal Sam had been keeping an eye on the pets while he and Jen, 35, were away.

His Japanese Akita dog, Shadow, was outside in his own kennel. Jermaine said: “Shadow was a real beast and every time he saw the cats he’d jump at the door.

“He was an absolute menace. This one day I got a call from Sam.

“He was very nervous, really worried. He said, ‘Shadow’s killed the cat. I mean, J, he’s absolutely massacred it’.” He asked Sam to send him photos. Jermaine said: “There was blood everywhere – like you’ve never seen. It was a horrendous, distressing scene. I was feeling sick.”

But rather than come clean, he decided on a cover-up. He revealed: “We had to organise a professional carpet cleaner and a painter and decorator. We needed to completely repaint the walls and get new wallpaper.”

Confessing to the horror in his book Mental: Bad Behaviour, Ugly Truths and the Beautiful Game, out today, Jermaine defends his actions saying he did not want to lose Jennifer.

The pair dated from 2007 to 2008 and then briefly in 2009.

He tells her: “I’m really, truly sorry. But if I’d told you, we’d have broken up.” PET Jermaine walks one of his Akita dogs
