34,000 hit by Butlins hack attack
HACKERS may have snooped on up to 34,000 guest records at Butlin’s.
Data at risk includes names, home addresses, email addresses and telephone numbers.
But the holiday camp giant insisted “no financial data has been compromised”.
Its managing director Dermot King said: “Butlin’s takes security of guest data very seriously and have improved a number of security processes.
“I would like to apologise for any upset this incident might cause.
“A dedicated team has been set up to contact all guests who may be affected directly.” Raj Samani, chief scientist at computer security firm McAfee, said: “They’ve accessed a huge amount of information which can create a clear picture of an individual. They will know who is away and when.” McAfee found one in three people rely on the same three passwords for all their accounts. Mr Samani added: “Introduce a password generator to ensure you have unique passwords across all accounts. “For holidaymakers’ home security, they should ensure they have a neighbour keeping an eye on the property while they are away and alarms are set.”
