Crowds gather at Liverpool’s Lime Street station to witness the start of the historic final journey of Britain’s last main-line passenger train to be pulled by a steam locomotive. Dubbed the ‘Fifteen Guinea Special’, it was a special excursion train hauled by four different steam engines during the four legs of the 315-mile return trip from Liverpool to Carlisle, via Manchester. The British Rail steam ban began the day after the tour.
