PAUL YOU NEED IS LOVE

Slagged off by Jose, then Pogba gets the armband and Shaw is given a chance ...and both reward him with vital goals

- BY STEVE BATES

WORLD CUP winner Paul Pogba was Manchester United’s penalty-spot hero to give Jose Mourinho a winning start to the new campaign.

Mourinho sprang a double surprise by naming France star Pogba in his starting line-up and making him captain. He was instantly rewarded as the 25-year-old, who has a strained relationship with the Reds boss, gave his side a third-minute lead after Leicester’s Daniel Amartey

handled. Referee Andre Marriner had no hesitation pointing to the spot and Pogba stepped up to coolly beat keeper Kasper Schmeichel.

And on a good night for the grumpy United boss, he saw much-criticised full-back Luke Shaw seal victory with an 83rdminute goal to lift Old Trafford spirits.

Despite being back from holiday for just five days, World Cup winner Pogba answered Mourinho’s call to play – and United needed him.

Jamie Vardy pulled a goal back in injury time for Leicester but it was too little too late.

United’s team bus had arrived at the ground only an hour before kick off, after a tortuous three mile journey from their city centre hotel.
