YOUNG offender George Davey, aged 10, appears understand­ably glum after he’s sentenced to a month’s hard labour for stealing two rabbits.

His photo is one of a number of Victorian snaps, some of the earliest mugshots of child criminals, recently unearthed at the National Archives.

At the time, youngsters were locked up with adults for petty crimes. James Leadbetter, 11, got whipped and did hard labour for nicking celery.

The shots of inmates at Wandsworth Prison, South London, were taken between 1872 and 1873.
