Women land just third of big film roles
MALE stars outnumber women two to one in the biggest grossing films.
A study found just 33% of characters in the top 50 films of 2016 were female.
And the proportion dropped to 32% when only lead roles were considered.
A 2005 study found women were 28% of roles and 27% of lead characters.
While things have improved, the study in journal Sex Roles said this in no way reflects realworld demographics.
Prof Phyllis Anastasio, of St Joseph’s University in Philadelphia, said: “It is our hope with the momentum from the Weinstein scandal, Hollywood will make the changes that will lead not only to a reduction of stereotypes in film, but also to gender equality in all movie casting.”
