Summit up with our mountain

-

WALES has lost a mountain after one of its peaks was reclassified as a hill.

The 2,351ft Fan y Big, in the Brecon Beacons, was downgraded after being measured.

As well as being over 2,000ft high, mountains are required to have a drop of 98.4ft between summit and col – the lowest point on a ridge between two peaks.

Experts found Fan y Big’s drop to be 5ft short. It was struck off the list of Hewitts – Hills in England, Wales or Ireland over 2,000ft high.

Mountain surveyor Myrddyn Phillips, 57, said: “It is a shame but it is a fine hill.”
