WARD AND SINFIELD: THE UNLIKELY LADS

Reluctant coaches in huge showdown

DANNY WARD and Kevin Sinfield were unlikely coaching adversaries when they started their rugby league careers together in Leeds Rhinos’ academy.

By Ward’s own admission he never planned on getting into coaching, but has been a major success in his first year in charge at London Broncos, having risen through the ranks.

And Sinfield (above, right) had shown little inclination to follow suit before his return to the Rhinos two months ago, as director of rugby in charge of first-team affairs.

Tomorrow they will be on opposite sides of a crucial Qualifiers clash, with the Broncos hosting the current Super League champions as they look to preserve their top-flight status.

Ward (above, left) said: “I could never have imagined I’d end up coaching against Leeds – I didn’t look too far ahead back in those days.

“I had some decent times there and fond memories – Leeds is the kind of club that stays with you. Kev is a top bloke and was a champion player, and I’m looking forward to locking horns with him, plus Chev Walker and Rob Burrow, who are still there coaching.

“Kev was always the ultimate professional, but a good, relaxed guy off the field.

“He always had a great temperament and wasn’t a ranter or a raver on the field. He led by his actions and worked real hard. He was a quality player, and to have the career he did was because he always used to do all the little extras.

“The way he conducted himself on and off the field was always immaculate, and I’m glad to see him back involved at the club because he was a very special player there.

“Hopefully, he can get them back firing again – just not against us!”
