REFS’ SHOCK AS MADLEY QUITS GAME
BOBBY MADLEY has stunned refereeing colleagues with his decision to quit.
The 32-year-old was seen as one of the Premier League’s top referees yet the Professional Game Match Officials Limited (PGMOL) announced he has left his role “due to a change in personal circumstances”. Madley was on FIFA’s list of referees and his decision to quit is shrouded in mystery with current and former refs shocked and surprised.
Madley came in for heavy criticism last season with his fitness questioned. And he was also embroiled in a feisty Merseyside derby which saw a bust-up between Roberto Firmino and Mason Holgate (top).
Former top Premier League referees Mark Clattenburg (inset) and Howard Webb also quit in recent seasons, with the latter voicing frustrations at the PGMOL and their referee management.
