Stuff all that fancy pants Michelinstarred nonsense – nonna’s cooking is where it’s at.
Jamie Oliver and pal Gennaro Contaldo are on a foodie road trip around Italy, seeking out the mammas and nonnas of the country to share their family recipes. And it’s enough to make your mouth water.
In Puglia, which we’re told is the “hottest food destination in Italy”, they join a group of women who have been cooking together for years. As they make fresh pasta together, one nonna scolds Jamie: “That didn’t come out very well, try again,” and later blasts his efforts as “the ugliest ones”.
Jamie being Jamie he takes it in good spirits of course, and we’re then treated to a masterclass of pasta sauce making.
You’ll feel guilty about opening that jar of sauce from Sainsbury’s, let me tell you.
Later in the programme, in the dazzling streets of a whitewashed hill town, Jamie also discovers Italy’s answer to paella.
