Calamity Karius off to Turkey
LORIS KARIUS’S Anfield nightmare is over.
Turkish club Besiktas have agreed a deal to sign the keeper on a two-year loan – with an option to buy – which will be completed this week.
Liverpool have accepted an offer which will see them receive a £2.25million loan fee, and an extra £7.25m if the move is made permanent at any time.
The keeper, though, will actually sign a one-year extension to his current Reds contract, which means Liverpool are protected in terms of contract length – and the ability to secure a fee – if he doesn’t sign a permanent deal at the end of the loan with Besiktas.
The German keeper, 25, endured a nightmare in the Champions League final, and then suffered further in pre-season, even after manager Jurgen Klopp offered his backing.
The Reds boss was prepared to give Karius a second chance after accepting he was concussed against Real Madrid, but a succession of howlers persuaded him to move for £66m Brazil star Alisson.
Klopp will allow only one keeper to leave, and that means Simon Mignolet will now remain at Anfield.
