Madonna’s Aretha speech lacked Respect, slam critics

- BY KIM CARR

MADONNA has been blasted for a “self indulgent” speech on Aretha Franklin at the MTV Video Music Awards.

The singer, who was presenting Video of the Year, spoke for five minutes about her own career rather than that of the Respect singer, who died last Thursday – the same day Madonna turned 60.

On stage at New York’s Radio City Hall, Madonna told of her early struggles as she tried to make it as a professional dancer. She finally revealed she had sung Aretha Franklin’s classic You Make Me Feel Like A Natural Woman at the audition which launched her career. But Twitter users described Madonna as “self-indulgent,” with one writing: “D.I.S.R.E.S.P.E.C.T.” Madonna said MTV had only asked her to “share anecdotes” about Franklin.
