US Secretary of State Dr Henry Kissinger is pictured outside No. 10 with Prime Minister Harold Wilson after briefing him on the Middle East situation. A Jewish refugee who fled Nazi Germany with his family in 1938, Kissinger was chosen as Secretary of State by President Nixon 45 years ago today. During his time in office he negotiated a detente with the Soviet Union, helped open up relations with China and ended American involvement in the Vietnam War.
