OUR CAMPAIGN
THE Daily Mirror wants urgent Government action to bring in tighter rules on the sale of acid, found in products from paint stripper to drain cleaner.
In the past three years there have been at least 2,600 attacks in Britain, with victims as young as two and suspects aged just six.
In particular we are calling for a crackdown on internet sales. The Offensive Weapons Bill, being debated in Parliament, would make it harder for young people to buy online, with rigorous age verification to prove they are over 18. Failure to apply this will leave sellers liable to prosecution.
The legislation will also create a criminal offence of possessing a corrosive substance in a public place. But a change in the law is not expected before 2019.
