Islam fears ‘not to blame’ for BBC axe on Nad Mecca show

- BY KIM CARR

THE BBC has denied it scrapped Nadiya Hussain’s series about a pilgrimage to Mecca because of concerns over promoting Islam.

They said the Bake Off winner’s show was axed due to “visa issues”.

When the two-parter about the Hajj to Saudi Arabia was announced, Nadiya, 33, who has made the trip once already, called it “one of the most intense experi- ences you can undertake”. A BBC spokesperson said: “It is simply untrue that the series is not going ahead due to concerns about promoting Islam. “The reality was that there were problems obtaining visas to film in Saudi. “We love Nadiya as a presenter, which is which why we have a number of shows coming up that she will be fronting.” Nadiya’s Family Favourites series is currently running on BBC Two.
