Poobiotics may be life savers
A COCKTAIL of probiotics made from baby poo may be the key to fighting potentially fatal diseases, such as cancer and diabetes.
In experiments on mice, the probiotics – taken from dirty nappies – boosted gut bacteria, making them more resistant to illnesses that attack the immune system.
The probiotics may increase the body’s ability to produce short-chain fatty acids that protect against a range of conditions. Prof Hariom Yadav, of Wake Forest School of Medicine, North Carolina, USA, said: “People with diabetes, obesity, autoimmune disorders and cancers often have fewer short-chain fatty acids.
“Increasing them may be helpful in maintaining or even restoring a normal gut environment, and improving health.”
