Plight of 123,000 youngsters with nowhere to call home
TENS of thousands of children have spent a “miserable” summer holiday living in temporary accommodation, council chiefs said.
The Local Government Association said the number of homeless children has risen from 70,000 to 123,000 since 2011.
It said councils struggle to find accommodation for an additional 650 homeless children every month. The LGA added: “The instability can affect parents’ employment and health whilst children can struggle to take up hobbies, form friendships and succeed at school.” The LGA are calling for town halls to keep all of the profits from selling council homes so they can invest in more housing, The LGA’s Judith Blake said: “For too many families the summer holidays have been a miserable existence.”
