Greener fuel E10 ‘will cause chaos on garage forecourts’

- BY RUKI SAYID Consumer Editor

LAUNCHING a greener fuel may cause chaos on forecourts, experts warn.

It is feared bringing biofuel E10 to the UK will force petrol stations to add another pump and confuse motorists.

RAC figures show 634,309 popular family hatchbacks will not be compatible with E10 if it is introduced at larger stations as planned in 2020.

And Brian Madderson of the Petrol Retailers Association, which opposes the move, said: “Labelling of dispensers and nozzles would require consumer education and Government seems unprepared for the costs and format of such a programme.”

According to the RAC, cars over eight years old are not compatible with E10.

VW Golfs top the list, followed by Nissan Micras and Ford Escorts.

E10 fuel has 10% bioethanol against 5% in unleaded petrol and its inclusion is said to cut greenhouse gas emissions by 2%. A Department for Transport consultation ends on September 16.
