Today’s photo shows rock fans about to leave the ferry on arrival at the Isle of Wight for the music festival. It was estimated that between 600,000 and 700,000 people turned up for the five-day event with a line-up that included Jimi Hendrix, The Who, The Doors, Joni Mitchell and Free. But despite the massive crowds, it was a commercial flop with organisers being forced to declare it a free festival. It also faced opposition from local residents.
