Cutting out carbs ‘increases risk of early death by 32%’

- BY MARTIN BAGOT Health and Science Correspondent

LOW-carb diets that cut out bread, pasta and potatoes increase the risk of early death by up to 32%, a study found.

Researchers said the trend towards diets high in protein and fat, like meat and cheese, was “dangerous”

Such diets raised risk of death from heart disease, strokes and cancer by 51%, 50% and 35% respectively. This research followed 25,000 Americans, of average age 48, over six years. A wider review of all studies, involving 448,000 people, put the increased risk of death at 15%. Study leader Prof Maciej Banach, of Lodz University, Poland, said: “These diets should be avoided.” He added they “might be useful in the short term” to lose weight. Public Health England already advises dairy intake to be limited to 200 calories a day for men and 160 for women.
