Tory ‘danger of Brexiteer infiltration’
THE Tory party should halt a membership drive to stop infiltration by UKIP supporters and “hard Brexiteers”, an ex-minister said.
Anna Soubry said they hope to “topple the leader and destroy government policy” by joining.
She has called for a halt to recruitment “until we can be confident we are not being infiltrated”.
But fellow MP Robert Halfon said Ms Soubry was talking “utter nonsense”, adding: “We should welcome members whatever their Brexit views.”
Arron Banks, Leave.EU founder and ex-UKIP donor, has called for new members so a “true Brexiteer” can lead the Tories.
Theresa May is said to be facing a challenge if she fails to deliver a hard Brexit or talks collapse.
