Student died taking herbs with shaman

- BY ADAM ASPINALL

A BRITISH student died after drinking an hallucinogenic herb in an ancient tribal ritual in Colombia, an inquest heard.

Henry Miller, 19, was fascinated by South American culture and had taken the herb, known as yage or ayahuasca, with a shaman two days before.

The next time he drank the herb with the tribe he fell ill and could not breathe, the inquest in Bristol was told.

The shaman’s son tried to get Henry to hospital on his motorbike but he died en route on April 23, 2014.

In a statement the son said his “nerves got the better of him” and he left him at the side of the road.

Before his death Henry had been due to study English at Brighton University. Verdict: Accident.
