1991: Bob Beamon’s 23-year-old world long jump record was broken during the World Championsh­ips. Carl Lewis surpassed Beamon’s leap of 8.90 metres with 8.91m, but that was not valid for the record books due to wind assistance. Then Mike Powell jumped a legal 8.95m to clinch the gold medal. It has not been surpassed.

2004: Manager Sir Bobby Robson was sacked by Newcastle.

2015: Manchester City signed Wolfsburg midfielder Kevin De Bruyne (above) for a club-record fee, believed to be around £54million, with the 24-year-old signing a six-year deal.
