ON THIS DAY: 2015
1991: Bob Beamon’s 23-year-old world long jump record was broken during the World Championships. Carl Lewis surpassed Beamon’s leap of 8.90 metres with 8.91m, but that was not valid for the record books due to wind assistance. Then Mike Powell jumped a legal 8.95m to clinch the gold medal. It has not been surpassed.
2004: Manager Sir Bobby Robson was sacked by Newcastle.
2015: Manchester City signed Wolfsburg midfielder Kevin De Bruyne (above) for a club-record fee, believed to be around £54million, with the 24-year-old signing a six-year deal.
