E FOR ELECTRIC

-

Electric Bob, Mirror Motoring’s electric car disciple, will no doubt be very excited by the news that Jaguar is going to build production versions of the electric E-Type that was famously driven by Harry and Meghan to their wedding reception.

A 40kWh battery will sit under the famous long bonnet to provide power for an electric motor that sits where the Jag’s gearbox would normally be. The batteries weigh the same as the six-cylinder 3.8 or 4.2-litre engine normally found in 1960s E-Types.

The electric E-Type will have quicker acceleration than the original with a range of 170 miles.

What we don’t know is a price but I bet it won’t be much under £300,000.

Jaguar says that it will also supply an electric powertrain for existing cars that can be fitted in place of the car’s original engine.

A great idea or heresy? I’m not sure, but I wish that Jaguar would build a sports car that is affordable (unlike the F-Type) and small and exciting to drive – rather than spending its time producing expensive recreations of its past.
