PLASTIC bag prices will at least double to 10p to boost the war on waste, it has been confirmed.
A consultation on the move was announced by the Government yesterday – and it could see all shops having to charge regardless of how big they are. Currently only those employing more than 250 have to take part in the scheme, launched in October 2015.
One earlier report had suggested officials feared the rise could be seen as “profiteering”, but PM Theresa May said: “The charge on plastic bags has demonstrated the difference we can achieve by making small changes... I want to leave a greener, healthier environment for future generations.” Backing the scheme, United Nations environment chief Erik Solheim called it “an inspiring step in the right direction”.
