Egypt PM: I’ll solve hotel death riddle
TRAGEDY John and Susan THE couple who made Princess Diana’s wedding dress designed a spectacular white burka for her to wear on her 1986 visit to the Gulf States.
David and Elizabeth Emanuel submitted five sketches of dresses which “conformed to local customs” before Diana’s tour of Oman, Qatar, Bahrain and Saudi Arabia with Prince Charles. The drawings are now up for auction
Lady-in-waiting Anne BeckwithSmith told the Emanuels in a letter: “In all cases modesty is the order of the day.” The husband-and-wife team submitted designs for four long-sleeved outfits, which the princess wore. A fifth “reserve outfit” included a large bow and a white veil which would have revealed only Diana’s eyes. She wore a similar dress without the head covering at a dinner in Saudi during the tour. The sketches, letter, fabric samples and an invoice pricing the dresses from £275 to £450 each, are being sold by a private collector. Auctioneer RR Auction, based in Boston, US, hopes they will fetch £24,000 on September 25. DESIGNS David Emanuel
