Scammers are phoning people pretending to be from the Association of British Insurers, the industry body has warned.

The ABI says it would never contact people about a personal injury claim or endorse a claims management company. Anthony Wright, of the ABI, said: “Any cold callers saying they are connected with the ABI are cowboys trying to scam honest people into making a fake claim.

“If someone does contact you about a personal injury claim saying they work for the ABI, put the phone down.”

It’s just one of many cold call and text scams out there with crooks impersonating official bodies from the taxman to the police, banks and other financial firms.

Genuine organisations do not call out of blue. They would never ask you for PINs, passwords or to move cash to another account due to fraud.

You can report nuisance calls and texts to the Information Commissioner’s Office via https://ico. org.uk/make-a-complaint/nuisancecalls-and-messages/ or telephone 0303 123 1113.
