TALKING HAWES SH**
Jed Mercurio’s new TV drama Bodyguard, starring the wonderful Keeley Hawes, enabled BBC-haters to froth at the mouth over a new outbreak of right-on-itis.
Much outrage was vented over the high number of main characters (Home Secretary, police chief, markswoman, bomb disposal expert and train manager) being female.
They reckoned that was a load of, well, what men have dangling at the top of their legs, because it wasn’t truly representative of the UK. Even though, when Mercurio was writing the script, we had a woman Head of State, Prime Minister, Home Secretary, Shadow Home Secretary, Scottish First Minister, Metropolitan Police Commissioner, Director of Public Prosecutions, TUC General Secretary and leaders of the Greens, Plaid Cymru, Sinn Fein, the DUP and Scottish Tories. WPC Gone Mad I call it.
