A solemn Winston Churchill arrives for a Cabinet meeting at No 10 following Germany’s attack on the semiautono­mous Free City of Danzig and the subsequent invasion of Poland. With war in Europe looming, Britain had formally entered into an alliance with Poland on August 25. Churchill had been a fierce critic of PM Neville Chamberlai­n’s policy of appeasemen­t in the 1930s and had called for Britain’s rearmament against the Nazi threat.
