Longest hottest summer
Heatwave seals a record show
THIS year’s scorching summer was the UK’s joint-hottest on record and the warmest ever in England.
Temperatures between June and August averaged 15.8C, equalling those in 1976, 2003 and 2006.
And the average temperature in England over the same period topped the hot and dry summer of 1976.
Forecasters said it was also one of the driest and sunniest summers on record.
And the Met Office reckons that the dry and bright conditions will continue into the autumn.
According to its records, the average temperature in the UK this summer was exactly 15.80C. In 1976 and 2003 it was 15.77C and in 2006 it was 15.78 – but all were officially recorded as 15.80C.
The mean temperature for England was 17.2C – narrowly beating the 1976 record of 17.0C. Wales averaged 16.0C, Ireland was
15.1C and Scotland was 13.6C over the summer months.
The UK also experienced its hottest June day in 41 years, when 34.5C was recorded at Heathrow. And the summer’s warmest day was on July 27, when temperatures reached 35.6C in Felsham, Suffolk. The Met Office said yesterday that “above-average” temperatures could continue in the autumn as there is an increased chance of high-pressure dominating weather systems between September and October. The report said: “This would result in more settled UK weather conditions overall.” But the Met Office also warned that northern England could experience thunder and hail storms later this week.
