New Queen’s head goes on Aussie coins

- BY RYAN WILKINSON

A NEW portrait of the Queen will appear on Australian coins in the first update for 20 years.

The design, by the Royal Mint’s Jody Clark, was unveiled in Canberra by Sir Peter Cosgrove, Governor-General of Australia.

The update, to be introduced next year, is the sixth time the Queen’s portrait has changed on the currency since her coronation in 1953.

Sir Peter said: “It will be a new image for a new era, continuing to tell the story of a reign and life.”

In keeping with tradition, Mr Clark’s design shows the Queen facing right and wearing a diamond diadem crown.

The image varies from that in the UK by showing her shoulders and coronation necklace.
