We should have kept Moyes

WEST HAM legend Tony Cottee says the rock-bottom Hammers would have been better off keeping David Moyes on as manager.

Moyes left during the summer after keeping the Irons up last season. But his successor, Manuel Pellegrini, who won the Premier League with Manchester City, has suffered a nightmare start at the London Stadium. He has lost

FROM BACK PAGE his first four league games despite splashing out £100m on fresh talent in the summer.

And ex-West Ham striker Cottee, 53, told talkSPORT: “At the end of last season I thought, ‘We have had two difficult seasons and what we need is a third season of stability’.

“We had someone at the club in Moyes who could have done that but, no, the board decide to go and choose someone else.

“I don’t understand the appointment of Pellegrini. I didn’t understand it at the time. We should have kept Moyes.

“It is alright saying Pellegrini is a great manager but when you are managing Man City and have the best players in the world it is a lot easier than coming to West Ham and having to motivate the players. I don’t think he is going to motivate and inspire the players. I am worried it is going to be a battle to stay up.

“And the ironic thing is if they were to get rid of Pellegrini, they would be saying ‘we need a Sam Allardyce or David Moyes to come in and steady the ship’ which is what they had in the first place. It is absolutely ridiculous.”

New Hammers winger Andriy Yarmolenko has apologised to the fans for the club’s bleak start.

The £17.5m signing said: “I want to say sorry to our fans and we must perform better. We have a good coach and players, but we must fight for results.”
