Amazon joins Apple in the $trillion club

- BY CHRISTOPHER BUCKTIN US Editor

AMAZON has become the second company to be worth more than $1trillion (£777 billion).

Shares of the online giant gained about 2% yesterday to hit $2,050.27 on the US stock market.

The rise put Amazon’s value just over the symbolic milestone Apple hit less than a month ago.

Last month it was revealed Amazon’s UK tax bill fell to just £4.6million.

The division which operates its warehouses was able to defer paying £2.9million of that.

It meant that the company has paid £1.7million in tax for now, even though pre-tax profits jumped from £24.3 million to £72.3million.

Amazon said it paid all the taxes required by law.
