May watches families sink into £1k debt

- BY ANDREW GREGORY Political Editor

FAMILIES have been left £1,250 in the red since Theresa May came to power, figures reveal.

The Prime Minister vowed to fight for “justabout-managing” households back in July 2016.

But a TUC analysis of official data found that in every quarter since her arrival at No10, families’ outgoings have outstripped incomes – a total deficit of £34 billion.

It said many homes were at a “cliff edge” after disposable incomes fell 0.4% annually in two years, due to lower wages and insecure work.

TUC general secretary Frances O’Grady said the PM must “get serious about domestic issues. “Families on the edge need more than empty words.”
