Cops’ 14 days to notify
IF a driver is not stopped for an alleged speeding offence – for example, they are caught on camera – the vehicle’s registered keeper must be sent a notice of intended prosecution within 14 days.
This rule comes under section 172 of the Road Traffic Act 1988 and police have to be able to prove that, in the normal course of events, it would have arrived at the last known address of the registered keeper within the timeframe.
Website nopenaltypoints.co.uk says if it arrives after 14 days, it can be refused on the basis that “it is time-barred”.
