Rising demand for “trendy” electric bikes has helped charge up sales at Halfords.

The group said cycle sales rose 0.8% in the 20 weeks to August 2017 as people took to their bikes in the hot weather.

Electric bikes, either for commuting or powering up and down mountains, saw the strongest demand. Strong sales of car cleaning products and outdoor equipment helped overall sales rise 2.6%.

New boss Graham Stapleton said: “I am pleased with the performance in what continues to be a challenging environment.”
