We firmly back the Government’s decision. Generally people have little idea what a calorie is but the recommended daily count for a woman is 2,000 and 2,500 for a man.
Currently there is no easy way of calculating how many you have had through a day, so we overshoot those figures and eat too much.
Even the recommended amount is on the excessive side because they were calculated as a guide for today’s population, two-thirds of which is overweight.
Public Health England has suggested an upper limit of about 1,800 – 400 for breakfast, 600 for both lunch and dinner – and the rest for snacks.
As a significant step to help people know for sure how much they are eating, the move is excellent. If the government is to succeed in its bid to beat obesity it is correct to consider legislation.
